If his four-year-old daughter gets sick again, Chris Gorski will take a drastic step. He will collect some of his own stool, strain it, and then transfer it into his daughter’s body. This procedure — known as a fecal transplant — has been shown to help people like Chris’s daughter Maya. Meanwhile, other patients and scientists hope that this bizarre transplant might work as medicine for a range of diseases, from asthma to MS.

The Poop Outlaws: At-Home Fecal Transplants to Cure Disease (via theatlantic)

I think some people might look at this and think WTF, but fecal transplants have proven to be helpful for those with bacterial imbalances in the intestines. Namely an infection that prevents them from having healthy bacteria and it can cause the breakdown of the intestinal lining.  The healthy bacteria in the fecal transplant promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in the transplant location.

If I’m remembering right from another article, having a transplant from someone in the same environment as you is best since they’ll be eating the same food as you, etc. So that’s why you hear about a father providing the fecal transplant for a daughter, a husband provides for his wife, and so on.

UM I PROBABLY SOUND LIKE I KNOW WAY TOO MUCH ABOUT THIS. But I love learning about medical advances that may be strange to others.

If it does prove to work for other diseases than that’ll be interesting.
